This is super interesting. Clearly employee discontent is top of mind for large orgs. But as you explore these issues further with the PRX employees (and ex employees?), I wonder if you can ask them about what they think would be the solutions to the org's problem. One person here is hinting that a leadership change is necessary. That's not always the fix we think it'll be. It's certainly not a quick fix for deep-rooted cultural problems that are described here. So I wonder what else could PRX do but hire, promote, and green-light more shows from BIPOC creators? Do these employees feel that isn't enough of a demonstration of valuing them and their ideas? I'm very much interested in the management-employee dynamic and where expectations are.
I've asked many of the former employees that question and will share their answers in part 2 of the series — after that publishes, I'd love to hear your thoughts!
Hey! Wondering how my podcast business or podcast can be featured in your newsletter. Is there a place I can go to submit it for consideration, or pay for sponsorship/ads?
Thanks for the post. Interesting read. It is really sad for podcasters when their whole life's work is bought and thrown away. Shame on Spotify and the leaders there for seeming to have NO humanity and only care about money.
Curious how do you define "legacy of racism" ? I have seen a lot of bloggers exaggerate in a lot of posts in the past several years and I really don't think it does any good for anyone involved especially in a sensitive situation like this. Did people speak up before 2020 at PRX? Would love to know more about that because 2 years since people spoke out/had experinces doesn't seem like it constitutes a "legacy" of something when the company has been around for almost 20 years https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Radio_Exchange
I see on the PRX website that 3/6 of the C-employees are people of color and about half of the "senior" employees appear to be people of color. I don't use FB or Linkedin so I can't see, but were any/many of them there before/in 2020? I guess we will see more when you post the next PRX update!
Hey - I did reach out to Parcast but unfortunately, no one got back to me. I would have loved to talk to them as well. Perhaps I should have kept trying, but when so many people at Gimlet responded, my plate got full very quickly.
Skye,

Skye,
This is great stuff. I would love it in an audio format that wasn't the subsctack robot.
Ahhh interesting...I haven't taken advantage of the audio capabilities on Substack yet, but I'll keep that in mind!
